Scratches in my engine and my heart...

It's a sad day in moped land. I finally got some tools to take a look at the cylinder and cylinder wall on my Pug, and they don't appear to have been loved and lubed for a long time.

The oil rings on the cylinder are nicked as well, but my camera couldn't take pictures with that amount of detail.

Due to problems with the engine tension spring, a fin on the engine head broke off as I was detaching the motor (I'm still kicking myself for that one). I don't know how much extra heat that's going to cause, hopefully not too much.

I'm wondering if I need to buy a engine head/body/piston kit. A 70cc kit would go better with a Dellorto 15/15 anyway - I've heard that you engine will run too rich unless you switch to a bigger bore and exhaust system. I'm not sure I can stomach the cost though - a new Dellorto carb. with a cable choke, a new clutch cable, and a kit like this one on treatland.tv (http://www.treatland.tv/peugeot-malossi-70cc-cylinder-kit-p/peugeot-malossi-70cc-cast-iron.htm) would cost upwards of $200, not including a bunch of smaller things I have yet to get - switches, a fuel line, handles, etc. I could stick with the stock Gurtner carb. so the engine wouldn't run too rich (no-one seems to like these, although they are often called 'reliable'), get my engine bored somewhere and buy an oversized piston, but this might end up costing almost as much as the 70cc kit.

Ideas?

A devil in a blue dress...

Welcome to Moped Repair, a blog currently dedicated to fixing my moped! Some background: Last weekend, I responded to a craigslist add for a '77 Peugeot 103. I ended up buying it, but it hasn't been well taken care of over the years. I have almost no mechanical experience, but I really enjoy working on the moped. While the current phase of my plans is dedicated to rust removal, I am also trying to learn about the different parts of the bike.

Some obvious problems:

- It's missing a carburetor (I've heard replacing the stock carburetor - Gurtner - with a Dellorto 15mm is a good idea anyways).
- It's missing the panel of switches that controls the lights, ignition, and horn, as well the clutch cable and the clutch handle.
- It's missing the break light, and the wiring seems disorganized and potentially problematic.
- The inside of the gas tank is crusted with a unknown substance (it seems to be a mixture of crystallized gas and rust).
- The rear brake handle is bent.
- Other cosmetic things (The paint job is peeling/rusting, the fork lock has been destroyed, etc).

I've been able to take some of rusty parts of the moped off to clean (wheels, muffler, chains), but I broke my ratchet trying to take the motor off. I'll have to wait until the weekend before I can get another one. However, I have established that the engine is not seized (I took out the spark plug and watched the piston moving as I turned the crankshaft). I took some pictures of the bike before I started taking things off, and after of what I took off - I'll post those soon. Currently, I'm wondering:

- What is the different between chokes - i.e. 'lever choke' and 'cable choke' - and how does that play into my bike?
